Purplewood
and leather pair of chairs by Sergio Rodrigues, 1960s
30" high, 25" wide, 23" deep
$4,800.00
Born
into a family of prominent Brazilian artists and intellectuals in the Copacabana
neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Rodrigues (1927) took the passion for
art and culture that surrounded him and shaped it into a career as one of Brazil's
most influential designers, beginning with his homemade toys and expanding beyond
Brazil's borders with his company Oca as the "Sheriff" chair took the world
by storm in the 1960s. Borrowing traditional techniques from European and American
woodworking craft, Rodrigues employs details such as large wooden pegs to accentuate
relaxed silhouettes and a play of space. Today, he shows no sign of slowing
down and is currently producing some of his best designs.
