Bonheur (Isodore-Jules), animal sculptor, born in Bordeaux (Gironde) May 15 1827, deceased in 1901 (French School.) Son of the painter Raymond Bonheur, brother of Rosa Bonheur. He first studied to be a painter under his father his father's tutelage and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Debuted at the Salon in 1848 with a painting and a sculpture but soon began to focus solely on sculpture. Member of the Salon until 1899, Bonheur won first place in 1889 and became a Member of the Legion of Honour in 1895. Among the monuments that he cast were, his sister's memorial statue at Fontainbleau completed in the last two years of his life, and two stone lions for the Palais de Justice in Paris.
